I can’t eat Quinoa everday….

September 27th, 2012

….so why not reach out for other delicious grains like Organic Hulled Millet? Another grain that is not far from the  protein content of Quino (14% by mass), Millet (11% by mass) likely closer to the protein in wheat.

Here is a simple recipe for you to try.

2 cups Organic Hulled Millet
6 cups Water
Grape seed Oil
Sea Salt
Fresh celery tops
Chopped Garlic (2)
One Red Onion
Juice of one lemon

Cook the millet for 20 minutes in the rice cooker or 35-45 minutes on stove top. Chop your other ingredients, drizzle with oil and season well. Simple and delicious!

Millet is rich in B vitamins (B6 and niacin)iron, calcium, potassium, zinc and magnesium. It also contains no gluten- awesome option for those who are intolerant to gluten, and is perfect for those who have wheat sensitivities and celiac. It is  a good source of fiber as well.

The kids just call it bird seed, but love it!

Oddly enough most of us have seen this grain in bird feeders, and is known to be used to brew beer and for distilling liquor.  Organic Hulled Millet is a tasty addition to every meal. It is a very ancient grain-particularly the foxtail millet, dating back to 6500 BC.

We like it because it is easy to cook, stove top or in a rice cooker, it can be locally sourced as well and is available Certified Organic. The variety I have been buying is from Oak Manor Farms Inc., they are known for sourcing organic grains, non-GMO grains, seeds and beans form Certified Organic Farms. Most of their products are grown right here in Ontario!

Enjoy sourcing new foods grown close to home and don’t be afraid to try new ones. It is Organic Week and a great time to get out to your local Organic grocery store and see what they have to offer.
