10 ways to beat the flu…by eating seasonally, locally and increasing your intake of plant based-foods

January 9th, 2013

My Aunt Zeb recently told me that she needs to eat well to stay healthy and avoid the flu. She now 89 precious years old and until this day she has not taken the flu shot. She believes strongly that those who choose to eat poorly may be more susceptible to catching the flu and other viruses. Maybe she is right.

It is quite normal to get a cold, feel under the weather once in a while but what matters is your recovery rate, how quickly do you bounce back from these things. Or do you not get the flu at all and avoid weeks of misery by choosing to avoid processed foods, eating lots of fresh & local whole foods that are seasonally available and choosing to eat organically and from local micro farms.

Here are some tips to help you beat the flu through the food you eat.

1. Choose to eat more plant based foods to help build your immune system.
2. Eat less red meat and dairy, these two foods are linked to disease and food sensitivities.
3. Avoid imported fruits and vegetables, especially during flu season.
4. Source local, seasonal and organic fruits and vegetables all year long.
5. Avoid any factory produced foods like beef, poultry, lamb, pork and fish.
6. Source flash frozen fruits and vegetables and make smoothies and juices over the winter.
7. Avoid as much processed food as you can, start cooking at home and planning for the next day.
8. Eat foods that are non-GMO, read your labels and know where your food is coming from.
9. Eat a balance of fresh, cooked and raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes.
10. Listen to your body, if you feel unwell after eating a certain food, avoid it.

Could it be that more people are getting the flu  because we are not taking care of ourselves by  choosing to eat better, respecting our environment and our planet. I believe that getting the flu shot is a reactive way to deal with the situation.

Don’t’ forget to stay active, sit less and spend more time outside. Getting fresh air is also part of a healthy lifestyle.

We cannot avoid all flu and disease that we are susceptible to as we age, but we can be proactive. Science and time are telling us we need to wake up and start living better now.
