Growing fresh…one day at a time

July 26th, 2011

Every day we are able to take a little more form the garden, it is evolving constantly, growing and ever changing.  The zucchini is ready for the grill, the Swiss Chard is ready for the frying pan and garlic with fried Italian parsley. The beans and the peas rarely make it out of the garden as the kids are in there everyday, eating off the vine!
The changes that are taking place are reflecting the season that we are in. The farmers corn although late is almost as tall as I am, just over 5 feet! I was able to pick my first beefy tomato a few days ago, however the picture was blurry so we will get the next one that comes out later!

The last picture is the watermelon I was talking about the girls planting. This one is hanging outside the fence one foot above the ground…I am hoping it will be strong enough to hang on until it reaches the ground. We typically only see the end result at the grocery store. This one is just shy 2 inches in size. Witnessing this connects me with my food, where it comes from and the magical changes that take place before the food gets to my table. If you have not taken he time to grow a garden this year, take the time to be inspired and plan now for next year. If your yearning fresh produce, take advantage of the farmers’ markets and pick your own farms.
